Nim: instructions and practice

Take a moment with Nim before moving to another game. Remove the last counter on the board to win. Look at what changes after your first action. Keep the instructions close while learning this activity. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions.

Practice beyond the first move

Watch the feedback after an action. A message can explain whether the input was accepted or whether a rule needs attention. Notice the feedback after each input.

Aim for this result

Remove the last counter on the board to win. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

Work through the instructions

  1. Player 1 chooses a pile.
  2. Remove at least one counter, and up to all counters, from that pile.
  3. The next player chooses a pile and an amount.
  4. Continue until no counters remain.

Controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Look at the feedback after the action.

Follow the example

With heaps of 1, 2 and 3 counters, choose one heap and remove at least one counter from it. You cannot take from two heaps in the same turn. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Notice the change in the playing area.

Pay attention to this rule

Only one pile may be changed per turn. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Take enough time to read a new position. If a game has a timer, learn its controls first rather than searching for them during the round.
