The essentials of playing Backgammon

Start Backgammon by looking at the playing area and its controls. Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Check the rule that explains your first action. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Local two players; no doubling cube, stakes or remote matching.

A small practice goal

Before your first action, say what you are trying to achieve. Then compare the result with the goal. Make the next step deliberately.

The purpose of your moves

Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Notice how the game responds to your input.

Start here and follow along

  1. Roll and use the maximum legal number of dice; doubles give four moves.
  2. Enter barred pieces first.
  3. Points with at least two enemies are blocked; a lone enemy is hit.
  4. Bear off only after all pieces reach home.

Making selections and moves

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Read the example below alongside these instructions.

When only one die can be used and either is individually playable, use the larger die. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Notice the change in the playing area.

A useful caution

An oversized bear-off requires no piece farther from the exit. Compare the situation with the worked example. When a decision goes wrong, compare it with the common mistake described below. Start again only when you intend to leave the current round.
